Permanent Stacked Modular (and Podular) Buildings

Date Added

02 December 2021

Duration

1 hour 30 mins

After a period of historical development in which the construction method was applied to pioneering low and medium rise projects, Permanent Stacked Modular Buildings are being commercialised at scale, and increasingly in the form of high-rise urban towers. With greater political backing Modular has become a familiar Modern Method of Construction (MMC) in which volumetric units of pre-finished room sized accommodation are stacked by tower crane around lift and stair cores. Often (but not always) the cores are insitu reinforced concrete, and a wide range of Modular systems are available from a growing number of competing manufacturers.

Risk Control for Biofuel Manufacturing Facilities

Date Added

10 February 2022

Duration

1 hour

The biofuel industry in the UK has grown from almost nothing in 2005 to one with a capacity to produce over 1.5 billion litres per year in 2021. This industry forms part of the UK strategy to reduce use of fossil fuels.

To align with the growth in size and scale of biofuel production, RC46: Risk control for biofuel manufacturing facilities has been extensively revised and broadened to cover both biodiesel and bioethanol manufacturing units, up to large industrial scale manufacturing plants.

This webinar will cover the key hazards associated with commercial biofuel manufacturing plants and recommended risk controls aligned with expectations for chemical/process sector manufacturing plants.

Insurance challenges of massive timber construction

Date Added

04 March 2022

Duration

1 hour

An inevitable consequence of the Net-Zero ambition will be the increased use of wood as a structural building component of large buildings. For the insurer this presents a number of challenges derived from the change in materials used, the ways they are assembled, and the additional insured perils that come into play. These changes impact the very heart of established insurance principles for assessment and risk measurement, and to the uninformed the level of insurer concern could be mistaken for a knee-jerk reaction to the unknown.

To ensure the insurer viewpoint is appropriately communicated to all stakeholders, RISCAuthority has released a white paper entitled ‘Insurance challenges of massive timber construction (and a possible way forward)’.

Produced with input from 24 major UK insurers, this white paper definitively describes the insurance challenges of massive timber construction to the perils of fire and water. If embraced at the point of design, it is hoped that it will result in buildings that are both sustainable and insurable, satisfying the requirements of all stakeholders.

This webinar introduces the key concepts of the white paper.

Class 0 Conundrum

Date Added

13 April 2022

Duration

1 hour

Class 0 was said to be the highest national performance classification for construction materials and products, such as in external walls, until the fatal fire of Grenfell Tower on 14 June 2017. It was defined in the statutory guidance of Approved Document Part B and not in any British Standard. The 72 deaths were a high price to pay for British society to discover that Class 0 could in fact be achieved by composite products with highly combustible cores.

This webinar will try to explain the Class 0 Conundrum using the evidence from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry to date.

Resilience for building designers and architects

Date Added

11 May 2022

Duration

1 hour

With regulation focussed almost exclusively on life-safety, and the move to more sustainable and potentially combustible materials and methods of construction, buildings are becoming less resilient.

Increased anticipated material damage, and associated material damage, can impact insurability and security of investment. With this in mind, the design community needs to respond with the inclusion of features to limit the extent of loss over and above that demanded in (life-safety) law.
